A Lifetime of Legal Experience Now Leveraged to Benefit Injured Workers in Ohio

Andrew Alatis is an Attorney at NRS Injury Law, focusing on workers’ compensation law. Andrew leverages multiple decades of legal and practical experience to ensure injured workers receive the best workers’ compensation legal representation in Ohio.

A Pathway to Workers’ Compensation Law

Andrew came to NRS Injury Law after a multi-decade career at the Ohio Attorney General’s office and in the private sector. Andrew previously served as Principal Assistant Attorney General in the Ohio Attorney General’s Workers’ Compensation Section and has practiced law since 1989.

Because the vast majority of his cases were resolved short of litigation, Andrew developed a particular knack for conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiations. However, Andrew also served the state of Ohio in various litigation roles, including litigating cases for the State Medical Board of Ohio, the Ohio Department of Insurance, the Ohio Department of Health, and litigating matters in the Department of Health’s radiation, asbestos, hospital, and other health care programs. These experiences, before his many years litigating cases with Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation and the Industrial Commission of Ohio, positioned him well to become a plaintiff’s attorney, where he leverages his rich understanding of healthcare, litigation, and workers’ compensation law to benefit working people.

A Well-Traveled Life Guides One to Service

“It wasn’t always legal cases, conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation,” Andrew says, reflecting on his first experiences in the workforce. “I used to wait tables, serve customers at a bank, and paint houses. Early on, I was blessed observing the integrity, resourcefulness, and hard work ethic that my parents modeled, with themselves being, one, a child of a coal miner, and the other, a child of a steel mill worker. Later, whenever I wasn’t working, I was traveling, be it for school, for church ministry activities, or exploring with old and new friends different parts of the world.”

Andrew’s lifetime of hard work, travel, and community service have all contributed to his career. “No matter what I was doing, whether it was meeting with working families in rural Michigan as an insurance specialist, resolving a dispute with travelers in the West Bank, providing free legal counsel to residents in a local homeless shelter in Columbus, working as an attorney in the AG’s office, or now as a workers’ compensation attorney, my core work mission has consistently been to be fair and to find a solution where everyone benefited.”

Work/Life Balance

When he’s not representing the firm’s clients, Andrew spends time with his family, either traveling the world or serving his community through his family’s church and other local organizations.

Andrew has been to over 40 countries in the world. He traveled throughout Eastern Europe during the Iron Curtain, crisscrossed the equator in East Africa, climbed the pyramids in both Mexico and Egypt (when such was legal), and traveled in the West Bank. He thankfully survived being buried alive in a snow avalanche in the Rocky Mountains, and one time he swayed in a high-rise office tower in Tokyo during an earthquake. Andrew has shot blow guns that used poisoned-tipped darts in the rainforests of Southeast Asia, and he negotiated swaying rope bridges spanning raging rivers in the jungles of Borneo. Andrew has also trekked the Gemmi Pass through the Swiss Alps, summited Mt. Garfield, rappelled down mountains in Colorado, traversed the Mekong River into Laos, climbed the Great Wall of China, and crossed the Nile at its headwaters in Lake Victoria, Uganda.

Despite those many great adventures, to this day, Andrew will say his two-year consecutive title as watermelon seed spitting champion at the Old-Time Farming Festival in Centerburg, Ohio, is one of his favorite accomplishments.

Community Impact

Andrew has always felt a calling to give back to his community. “I’ve traveled in countries run by dictators and oppressive regimes, and the comparison will make a person appreciate what he has back home,” Andrew said. “It will also make a person appreciate the value of community service and of everyone working together and cherishing the resources and opportunities we have been blessed with to create a better life for themselves, their loved ones, and their community.”

Living by that ethos, Andrew has provided volunteer legal counsel at homeless shelters through the Columbus Bar Association and the Columbus Legal Aid Society. For many years, he’s worked with an organization called International Friendships, Inc., leading multiple trips and local activities to support international students at the Ohio State University.
